Hoodoo has always contained work for difficult circumstances, including situations where someone needed an enemy weakened, driven away, exposed, or made too occupied with their own troubles to continue interfering.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis working is for those dealing with enemies, gossip, harassment, betrayal, malicious coworkers, troublesome neighbors, hostile relatives, competitors acting dishonestly, or anyone deliberately creating problems in their lives. It can also be used when someone’s plans, influence, or ability to interfere needs to be disrupted.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe jar will be built with vinegar to sour relationships and circumstances surrounding the target; lemon peel to add bitterness and sharpness; black pepper and red pepper to create irritation, agitation, and conflict; alum to tighten malicious tongues and interfere with gossip; poppy seed to bring confusion to harmful plans; and sulfur to give the work a harsher edge. Rusty nails will be added to trouble the target’s progress and keep pressure on the condition being worked.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEach petition will be written by hand and dressed with Reversing Oil before being placed into the jar. Black and red candles will be worked over it throughout the month. Black will carry enemy work, reversal, and the breaking of harmful influence, while red will add heat, agitation, and force. Psalms 35 and 7 will be prayed over the work for defense against enemies, judgment of wrongdoing, and deliverance from those who pursue harm.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor Hoodoo Heritage Month, this jar acknowledges an important part of conjure history that deserves to be remembered plainly. Hoodoo workers performed work for love and money, healing and protection, and they also performed work against enemies. Historical accounts of conjure contain stories of people seeking help with abusive employers, unfaithful lovers, dangerous neighbors, rivals, thieves, persecutors, and others who held power over their lives. Vinegar jars, hot ingredients, powders, tricks, reversing work, confusion work, and other forms of hostile conjure developed because people sometimes faced problems that called for a forceful response. These methods form part of Hoodoo’s history and help preserve a fuller picture of the tradition.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOctober’s Sour Jar will therefore focus closely on the specific behavior each participant wants stopped.
