Community Love Jar – October: Hoodoo Heritage Month

October is Hoodoo Heritage Month, and this month’s Community Love Jar honors the long place that love work has held within the Hoodoo tradition. Drawing a sweetheart, strengthening affection, encouraging fidelity, reconciling lovers, sweetening a difficult relationship, and keeping warmth alive between two people have been part of conjure for generations. Love work speaks to something deeply human: the desire to be chosen, cherished, remembered, desired, and treated well.

This working is for those seeking new love, increased attraction, reconciliation, deeper affection, renewed passion, stronger commitment, or greater harmony within an existing relationship. It can also be worked for someone who wants their romantic life opened so that suitable love has room to enter.

The jar will be built with rose petals for affection, tenderness, and romantic love; damiana for desire and attraction; catnip for drawing and holding a lover’s attention; hibiscus for passion and sensual warmth; lavender for peace between lovers; magnolia for fidelity, dignity, and lasting attachment; and a small amount of cinnamon to bring heat and movement to the work. Honey will sweeten the petitions and encourage affectionate words, warmer behavior, and greater tenderness between the people involved.

Each petition will be written by hand and dressed with Love Oil before being placed into the jar. Pink and red candles will be worked over it throughout the month. Pink will carry affection, tenderness, reconciliation, and emotional closeness, while red will strengthen desire, passion, attraction, and romantic movement. Passages from the Song of Solomon will be read over the jar, along with prayers suited to the individual petitions placed within it.

For Hoodoo Heritage Month, this jar also honors the ingenuity of traditional love work. Conjure workers used what was available to them: roots, flowers, powders, personal concerns, written names, bathwater, perfume, food, sweeteners, candles, and ordinary household objects transformed through intention, prayer, and skilled handling. Love work could be tender, persuasive, passionate, commanding, or reconciliatory according to the condition being addressed.

That history also reminds us how personal Hoodoo has always been. People came to workers with recognizable problems. A sweetheart had wandered. A husband was staying away from home. A woman wanted a particular man to notice her. Two people fought constantly and wanted peace. Someone was lonely and wanted companionship. The work grew from the realities of people’s lives, and the methods were chosen according to the condition at hand.

October’s Love Jar honors that tradition by focusing the work on the actual relationship condition each participant brings to the altar. The purpose is clear: draw good love closer, strengthen affection where love already exists, restore warmth where it has faded, and give romantic petitions sustained attention throughout the month.

Keep your own love work simple during October. Place a pink candle beside a small glass of water and read a passage from the Song of Solomon that speaks to you. If you are seeking new love, spend the month making room for companionship in your actual life. If you are working on an existing relationship, choose one concrete way to nurture affection, intimacy, or communication and practice it consistently.

Hoodoo Heritage Month is also an opportunity to learn how love and courtship were understood in earlier generations of your family. Ask about old courtship customs, marriage traditions, wedding stories, love songs, keepsakes, or family stories about couples who remained devoted to one another. Preserve the stories you receive.
