Community Protection Jar – November: The Living Veil

November’s theme is The Living Veil, a month devoted to the relationship between the living and the dead, the mysteries of the spirit world, ancestral remembrance, and the wisdom that comes from understanding our place within the great cycle of life and death. This month’s Community Protection Jar turns toward one of the oldest forms of spiritual guardianship: the protection of the living through prayer, ancestral remembrance, and the careful tending of the boundaries between worlds.

Throughout the Hoodoo tradition, protection has been closely connected to the home, the family, and the dead who came before us. The ancestors were remembered as people who had already faced the dangers, hardships, and uncertainties of earthly life. Their experience, their sacrifices, and the knowledge they left behind became part of the spiritual inheritance of their descendants. Honoring that inheritance has long been one way of seeking strength when the living face troubles of their own.

This working is for those seeking protection from enemies, jealousy, gossip, spiritual attack, crossed conditions, harmful influences, troublesome people, or circumstances that threaten their peace and security. It is also appropriate for protecting the home, family, children, business, reputation, and personal well-being, particularly during periods of grief, uncertainty, or spiritual vulnerability.

The jar will be built with angelica root for spiritual protection and strength; devil’s shoestring to trip up trouble and interfere with the progress of enemies; rue to guard against malice and the evil eye; rosemary for cleansing, remembrance, and protection of the household; black mustard seed to scatter harmful intentions; bay leaf for authority and victory; and hyssop for spiritual purification. A small piece of iron will be included to establish firmness and reinforce the protective boundaries surrounding each petition.

Each petition will be written by hand and dressed with Fiery Wall of Protection Oil before being placed into the jar. Red and white candles will be worked over it throughout November. Red will carry courage, strength, defense, and victory, while white will be used for cleansing, blessing, peace, and spiritual protection. Psalms 91 and 121 will be prayed over the jar for refuge, preservation, and safe passage.

In keeping with The Living Veil, a place of remembrance will be prepared for the protective dead: the ancestors who guarded their households, defended their children, endured dangerous circumstances, and helped their families survive. Fresh water and prayer will be offered in gratitude for the strength, resourcefulness, and protective wisdom they passed forward.

November’s altar will also acknowledge the importance of boundaries in spiritual life. Across many traditions concerned with the dead, there are prayers, observances, and spiritual figures associated with passage between the worlds. Psychopomps, the guides of souls, remind us that crossing from life into death is a journey with its own mysteries and responsibilities. Within the spiritual traditions of the African diaspora, the honoring of the dead has often been accompanied by careful attention to spiritual order, respect, and the proper relationship between the living and those who have departed.

This month’s Protection Jar will be worked with those principles in mind. The prayers will ask for the safety of the living, peace for the departed, and firm spiritual boundaries around the people and households named in the petitions. Particular attention will be given to clearing fear, strengthening courage, and guarding against harmful influences during a season when many people are especially mindful of death, remembrance, and the unseen world.

The Living Veil also asks us to consider what it means to face death without allowing fear to govern our lives. Our ancestors knew loss. They buried loved ones, endured grief, and continued caring for those who remained. Their example reminds us that courage can be inherited through memory, and that the love and protection we offer one another are among the most important responsibilities of the living.

November’s Protection Jar will therefore focus on strong defenses, peaceful households, clear spiritual boundaries, and the courage to move through uncertain circumstances with steadiness and good judgment. We will honor those who protected their families before us while asking for continued protection over the lives entrusted to our care today.

Suggested Alignment

During November, place a glass of fresh water beside a photograph or written name of a deceased ancestor you remember as strong, protective, or deeply devoted to their family. Choose someone whose memory brings you a sense of steadiness and reassurance.

Read Psalm 91 and say:

“I give thanks for those who kept this family through the troubles of their time. May their strength and good judgment remain alive in us. Guard this household, preserve our peace, and help us recognize danger before it reaches our door. May our beloved dead rest in peace, and may the living remain safe beneath the protection of God.”

Give your home some attention during the month. Sweep and clean the entrance, tend neglected spaces, and remove objects that carry unpleasant memories or associations. Pay attention to practical security as well: locks, lighting, privacy, and the people who have access to your household.

The Living Veil is also an opportunity to remember a family member who once made you feel safe. Write down a story about them, recall something they taught you, or share their memory with a younger relative. Preserving the memory of those who protected us is itself an act of gratitude.

To Be Included

Send your full name, date of birth, and a short protection petition describing what you would like addressed during November. You may petition for protection over yourself, your family, home, children, business, employment, reputation, spiritual well-being, or another area where stronger defenses are needed.

If a specific person is causing trouble, include their name when known and briefly describe the situation. You may also include the name of a deceased ancestor whose memory you wish to honor in your personal prayers during The Living Veil.
