Community Sour Jar – November: The Living Veil
November’s theme is The Living Veil, a month devoted to the relationship between the living and the dead, ancestral remembrance, the mysteries of death, and the spiritual responsibilities we carry toward those who came before us. This month’s Community Sour Jar explores one of the more formidable aspects of traditional conjure: the power of the dead, the handling of enemies, and the belief that those who have crossed into the next world remain part of the spiritual landscape of the living.
Throughout Hoodoo history, the cemetery has held a particular importance in certain forms of rootwork. Graveyard dirt, petitions to the dead, offerings, and work performed with the assistance of particular spirits appear throughout the tradition. The dead were approached with attention to their character, their relationship to the living, and the nature of the work being requested. A person remembered for fierce determination, cunning, or an unwillingness to tolerate wrongdoing might be approached very differently from someone remembered for gentleness and healing.
This month's Sour Jar draws upon that older understanding of the dead as powerful presences within the spiritual world, particularly in matters involving enemies, betrayal, malicious interference, and the need to bring troublesome situations to an end.
This working is for those dealing with enemies, harassment, gossip, betrayal, malicious coworkers, hostile relatives, troublesome neighbors, dishonest competitors, or people deliberately interfering with their lives. It is also appropriate for situations in which someone's influence needs to be weakened, their harmful plans disrupted, their lies exposed, or their ability to continue causing trouble diminished.
The jar will be built with vinegar to sour the circumstances surrounding the target; lemon peel to bring bitterness and sharpness; black pepper and red pepper to create irritation, agitation, and conflict; alum to tighten malicious tongues and interfere with gossip; poppy seed to scatter concentration and confuse harmful plans; and sulfur to add severity and force to the work. Rusty nails will be included to trouble the progress of those named in the petitions and maintain pressure upon the conditions being addressed.
Each petition will be written by hand and dressed with Reversing Oil before being placed into the jar. Black and red candles will be worked over it throughout November. Black will carry reversal, enemy work, and the breaking of harmful influence, while red will bring heat, agitation, and force. Psalms 35 and 7 will be prayed over the work for defense against enemies, the exposure of wrongdoing, and deliverance from those who seek to cause harm.
In keeping with The Living Veil, this month’s altar will also acknowledge the formidable dead: those ancestors whose lives were marked by courage, fierce determination, resistance, and an ability to confront dangerous circumstances. Fresh water and prayers of remembrance will be offered in gratitude for the strength and survival knowledge they left behind.
Special attention will be given to the boundaries between the living and the dead. The figures known as psychopomps, who guide souls between worlds, remind us that death is a passage surrounded by mystery, responsibility, and spiritual order. Hoodoo's traditions surrounding graveyards and the dead likewise emphasize the importance of knowing whom one approaches, why the work is being undertaken, and how the relationship is maintained with respect.
November's Sour Jar will draw upon these themes of endings, boundaries, and the consequences of harmful behavior. Some people become so accustomed to interfering in the lives of others that they begin to believe their influence is permanent. This work will be directed toward bringing those patterns to an end, troubling malicious plans, souring destructive alliances, and placing pressure upon those who persist in causing harm.
The Living Veil also asks us to consider what the dead can teach us about the limits of earthly power. Every reputation, position, fortune, and grievance eventually meets the same human ending. Remembering our mortality can give us courage when facing those who attempt to intimidate or control us. The people who trouble our lives today possess no greater claim upon eternity than anyone else.
This month's Sour Jar will be worked for the disruption of harmful intentions, the weakening of hostile influence, the silencing of malicious speech, and the removal of troublesome people from positions where they can continue causing damage. We will honor the strength of those who survived difficult enemies before us while directing the work toward the particular circumstances named in each petition.
Suggested Alignment
During November, place a glass of fresh water beside a photograph or written name of a deceased ancestor you remember as courageous, formidable, protective, or particularly skilled at handling difficult people.
Read Psalm 35 and say:
“I remember those who stood firm when trouble came against them. I give thanks for the courage that allowed my people to endure. Keep my judgment sharp, my spirit steady, and my enemies from gaining power over my life. May those who seek to harm me become occupied with their own affairs, and may their harmful intentions come to nothing.”
Take one practical step to strengthen your boundaries during the month. Limit contact with someone who repeatedly creates problems, preserve documentation of harassment, secure your personal information, or withdraw access from a person who has abused your trust.
The Living Veil is also an opportunity to remember a family story about someone who overcame a powerful enemy, survived persecution, defended their household, or refused to surrender to intimidation. Record the story if you can. The courage of the dead becomes part of the inheritance of the living when their experiences are remembered.
