The letter arrived on a Wednesday, tucked between a wholesale catalogue and the electric bill. After thirty-one years, the building had been sold. Miss Loretta had sixty days to move her beauty shop—the six dryers, the red leather chairs, the photographs of Easter hairstyles going back to 1998, and the little brass bell above the door that had announced half the women in the neighborhood.

She allowed herself one bad evening.

On Thursday morning, she dressed a candle with Van Van and set about clearing what disappointment had left behind. She threw away the broken things in the storeroom, telephoned people she had been avoiding, and drove to look at three addresses. The first had no parking. The second smelled permanently of boiled cabbage. The third was too expensive, although she stood outside it a long while before leaving.

That night, she worked with Algiers.

By Saturday, a client had mentioned an empty storefront owned by her cousin. It had good windows, a back room with a sink, and a landlord who preferred a dependable tenant to the highest possible rent. Loretta carried a Fortune and Favor petition into their meeting. The landlord waived the deposit. His brother came by with a truck. One of the old customers knew an electrician.

The brass bell hangs above a different door now.
